Mixing And Mastering

In this session it was time to mix and master the track we had created ready for handing in. To begin with me and sam started with the bass and drums leveling out the drums we used to match the bass, panning kits left and right. Then we moved on to the guitar where not much was needed to be done other than sort levels of harmonics and balances, again panning was used. The vocals were done using multitracking built by layers, panning and pitch shift.. Multipressor, adaptive limiter.

Vocal editing

In this session we had planned to edit the recorded vocals that we did in last weeks session. To begin with we started by listening to all takes that we had gotten and find which one was sung more towards the song style was. After this sam began trying to correct the vocals where they had gone out of tune using hard pitch shifting in the sample editor. we messed around with them fora while trying to find the odd words which had been sung flat, and raise them up a tadge. Also in this session we made some changes to arrangements in the chorus by adding more layers and also began panning some channels in order to give us more space to work within the track.

RECORDING VOCALS

Todays session was intended for creating vocals and recording them. We managed to get a verse, pre-chorus and chorus recorded.

To begin with shaun set up a microphone and stand whilst i tidied the room. Sam took the snare out of the room also to get rid of any snare rattle spilling on the recording. After this i got a signal coming through the mixing desk and set up a channel in logic routing it through input 2. Once we had everything set up we worked on a slight arrangement adjustment with the structure and middle of the track. Once all this was done, it was time to record the vocals, for this we had Demi from music practice first year. To being with we started with the chorus and recored 5 takes, then the pre-chorus with 2 takes and finally the verse with another 4 takes. I asked for multiple takes so i gave us multiple options of recordings and also now we can do some double tracking and harmonizing. The recordings came out to a good standard and with a little reverb and mixing i think they will sound great with the song.

In todays session, we had planned to create a rough vocal line using an instrument within logic to give the melody of which the vocals will be sang. And also due to last weeks problems, re-record the guitar. To begin with sam and myself set up the amplifier and an SM57 microphone, in order to get the recording. Sam was playing the guitar and i was doing the computer operating. Later on we tried to come up with a the vocal line, initially this was harder than we thought, but sam was able to come up with the vocal line we think we are going to use next session in the studio.

In this session we had originally planned to record the guitar parts and re-record the bass. To begin with in the session I decided it would be best to re-record the bass first as it would give us the initial structure of how the song was going to come out. To do this we used a DI box and Sam being our instrumentalist played the bass. At first we encountered some problems with the input level that the bass was getting, so we ditched the DI box and just directly input the bass into input 1, this still was a problem so we used input 2.

After getting the bass down it was time to record the guitars, for this we used a real amp rather than using the same method of inputing the guitar straight into the desk and into logic. This was to give us more option of sound rather than just the built-in sounds that logic has. We used a fender amp and Farida SA 16-mp. Shaun used an SM57 positioned at the edge of the cone. I then created the tracks within logic in order to record.

Sam played the guitar and i worked logic aswel as the mixing desk. We got alot of parts recorded, the verse, chorus and a bridge but then when trying to duplicate a track…. LOGIC CRASHED.. and we ended up losing all except a few chords of the recored guitar.

Thursday 22nd October.

This week our group wasn’t in the studio and so we had planned to come up with an arrangement for the track, incorporating an Intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge,chorus, outro. After inputting these sections into logic using the pencil and text tool, i then moved instruments around in order to create a rough guide to the intro, verse, chorus, bridge and outro. The layout i made is not final it is only to give a rough guide of the structure of the song. I also tried to include a bit of EQ in order to give some instruments a better sound.
Finally i also chopped up some more of the instrument recordings using the marque tool.

This weeks session involved creating a drum loop, bass ideas and recording percussion.

To begin with we created a pritty standard rock beat loop in order to jam the idea we had on bass and being to find a vision for the tune. Once we had the drum loop up, i plugged sams bass into the desk so we could have a straight input into logic. Once the bass riff we had was recorded in and played by Sam, i then asked him to lay a simple guitar meoldy over the top to give the track more layers. After trying a few different playing techniques, Sam and myself had the idea to use other percussion in order to create bigger sounding drums and other percussion to incorporate to the track.

Using an SM57 microphone we recorded a cowbell, ganzas, wood block, hand claps, shakers, surdo with rhythm relative to the style of ting tings and our track.

For this assignment we have to create a piece of music styled to a track that already has appeared in the top 20 of the UK chart in the last two years.

I am in a group with Sam and Shaun, and we have chosen the style of the TIng Tings to base our track around.
Today we tried to create a drum beat and bass to this style, but found it quite hard to get a start on the track. In order to solve this i think we will need to listen to some Ting Ting tracks in order to get the creative flow going. In order to create this track I realized we need some big drums whether they be recorded live or played through midi, some other percussion and a simple groove to be layered over the top.
